The Great Danish Pastry Incident

This morning, I made a rookie mistake. I left Ava in the car with my shopping bag while I popped into another shop. What I forgot — and she absolutely didn’t — was that the bag contained a packet of Danish pastries.

When I came back, the scene was clear: crumbs on the blanket, wrapper demolished, and one very pleased Cockapoo pretending nothing had happened.

Now, let’s be honest — this wasn’t a cry for attention or a sign of emotional turmoil. Ava is just greedy. Naughty. Opportunistic. And entirely herself. It was my fault, not hers.

But it did remind me how easy it is to slip up when life gets busy. So here are a few gentle tips I’m keeping in mind (and maybe you’ll find them useful too)

Keep the snacks out of reach   Even the most angelic dogs have a sixth sense for pastries. Lesson learned.

Double-check the car setup   Blanket? Check. Chew toy? Check. Temptation? Removed.

Don’t overthink it   Not every cheeky moment is a cry for help. Sometimes it’s just a dog being a dog.

Laugh, clean up, move on   Because really — what else can you do when your dog’s outsmarted you before 10am?

If your dog’s ever pulled off a snack heist, I’d love to hear about it. And if you haven’t yet, subscribe to enter our November raffle — no pastries involved, just festive treats and a bit of fun.
